I know it’s old, being that it was realised back in 2006 exclusively for the Xbox360 console, and the newly released sequel kicks its ass, but I have finally gotten my hands on a copy to review. If you like zombie games, mainly hack and slash action, this game should suit you. The play character is Frank West, a photojournalist who sneaks himself into the town of Willamatte, Colorado to investigate rumours of suspicious activity.
His career as a photojournalist is encorporated into the game, allowing you to take photographs in order to achieve photo points and I will not lie to you, this particular aspect of the game annoys the shit out of me. Frank is trapped in the shopping mall, and the major win of this game is there is at least 250 different weapons to be found and used. So far, my favourite is simple and practical, the Hunting Knife. More often than not, one stab kills. Other weapons include, guitars, police batons, tasers, chairs, golf clubs and handguns. The list goes on.
Weapons do eventually break down, so it definately wise to have more than one on you at a time. The main objective of the game is to investigate the mall and complete the “Case File” missions to eventually reveal the cause of the outbreak and play the story through. If you don’t feel like following the orders and completing the quests, the game can be alternatively played as a ‘sandbox’ or free-roaming game. Basically, ignore all the quests and tear shit up. Rip off some limbs, try on some novelty masks and make your death count soar baby!
Though this game is highly acclaimed, CAPCOM has insisted on having the photography as a key element in the game, which doesn’t work out to its advantage.
I rate this game 2.5/5
